Professor Jeff Patterson started teaching martial arts in 1988, with just a handful of students in his basement. Joining the Marine Corps shortly afterwards, he became a weapons instructor for his battalion teaching knife techniques to over 1000+ people. Serving for four years, he spent another four at Portland State University earning two Bachelor's Degrees in business.
We will get back to you promptly. If you need immediate assistance, please call us at 503-235-3435 or email us at contact@nwfighting.com. I've trained at NWFA with Sifu Jeff for about 10 years now. I'm still learning! At this point I am what many would consider a skilled teacher and practitioner of several of the disciplines taught at the academy.

Northwest Fighting Arts has scamming business practices.
I was very excited to start Muay Thai, but could only commit to two months at the time. I specifically went to them saying that I was interested, but only could commit to a two month contract. I had an initial 1-on-1 session which was great, and I signed their contract without understanding its terms. I should have read all the fine print and did not because I trusted the person signing me up and I was very clear that I would only sign up if I could do a two month contract. My situation changed at the end of those two months and I could

I've been training there for the last 4 months and I absolutely love it. The coaches are great and are super friendly and helpful.
If you're interested in getting in shape, learn some self defense, or even compete, then this place is perfect for you 😉

One of the best boxing/martial arts gyms in the Portland area. Great staff, great training and top notch facilities. Do some sparring rounds in the ring, hit a couple bags, or go down into the advanced training dojo underground in the dungeon. This place has everything for your needs. Work your way up three tiers of skill/experience. Haven't found a better fighting center, yet.

Great place and amazing coaches!
The coaches including the others who have been in the class for a while are super helpful and make sure to pass on what they have learned without any hesitation!
The coaches and everyone is respectful and fun to be around.
It’s helped me immensely with my health. Following it diligently is helping me shed the extra pandemic weight and also manage my work stress.

My son has been attending NWFA for 3 years. He describes NWFA as being the only place where he feels other kids aren't judging him. He wishes there was a school like NWFA. He feels like he belongs to a community. The owner and coaches teach and demonstrate mutual respect on a regular basis. They encourage kids to be their best and work to become leaders and skilled in martial arts.
As a parent, I can say NWFA brings out the highest level of focus and determination in my son that I have observed. I know the skills my son is learning are incredibly valuable to his character. They work with me financially

My 15 year old daughter tried the trial with her mom here and had the worse experience with the owner Jeff Patterson recently. Halfway through the trial period as she was gathering her things and putting gear away, he cornered her and asked to talk about prices, she said that she would talk in a min, his response was "no, we're going to talk right now!". Who does that to a kid???
Totally made her feel uncomfortable and she doesn't want to go back.
You'll also notice that most martial arts gyms have pricing on their websites, and on average, have $100 initiation fee's. NW Fighting Arts doesn't

I highly recommend that you give northwest fighting arts a try if interested. Great friendly community, coaches go over and beyond. Even in group training you get one on one time. Coach Daniel is one of the best coaches I have ever had. I have a lot of respect for northwest fighting arts. Great work outs every time you go. Give it a try if interested, you won’t be disappointed.

Look at their Yelp reviews, do not sign the contract.
I like and respect many people in this community, and a lot of the color belts were super helpful and supportive. I learned a lot from them as well as from Professor Jeff. However, the business practices here are not ethical. During the beginning of the lockdown, the gym continued to charge people the monthly fee with the assurance that we would get "free months" later on (without asking anyone if they agreed to this new arrangement). When I cancelled my membership, they refused to refund two months of payment that I had made during the lockdown

I have lived in Portland for my whole life and trained at many different gyms over the years and Northwest fighting arts is by far the best place to learn martial arts in town. Jeff Peterson and crew offer a better selection of classes, a better facility and a better schedule then any other gym in the metro area.
There is no tolerance for aggressive or dangerous behavior here. You train in safety and confidence that your instructors have your best interests at heart.
The fee is a little higher then some other places but if you actually take advantage of everything they offer it is well worth

I have been taking my son here for almost a year now. The staff has been more then friendly and helpful. All of the instructors pay attention to who is attending class as well as who they having missing. They are diligent in ensuring their students are coming regularly and practicing at home. The program itself has helped my son focus better on day to day activities as well as helping out around the house with out being asked. The little ninja class is a great way to get kids introduced into martial arts and I am very pleased with the decision we made in joining the gym. I have recommended it to
