Yoga Studio
Our teachers don't simply lead classes, they provide detailed instruction on HOW to practice in a supportive environment. You are not too old, too young, too stiff, too flexible, too thin or too big to enjoy the benefits of yoga. We excel at providing modifications and alternatives that make yoga accessible, nourishing and challenging to students of all abilities.

You can expect a safe and systematic progression of learning to foster your growth. Class sizes are small so each student receives individual attention and guidance. In addition, the philosophy of yoga permeates our teaching, encouraging you in self knowledge and providing a well rounded practice. Plus, many of our classes are taught by Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructors (CIYT).
Services
The Yoga Studio is Grand Rapids' first yoga establishment and was created in 1979 by Carolyn Heines. She began by teaching out of a small room in her home long before the general public even knew what yoga was! Carolyn then began renting various locations around the city and could be seen transporting yoga mats, blankets and other yoga props from place to place which earned the studio a nickname: "The Mobile Yoga Studio."
Our teachers study in the Iyengar system of hatha yoga and provide expertise and a supportive environment for our students. We are committed to continuing personal study, practice and studentship with Senior Certified Iyengar yoga teachers. Denise Baker is a Level 2 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and the owner of The Yoga Studio.
Though new owner Kat McKinney's journey to yoga might seem like an accident by happenstance, it is clear that she has found a passion that keeps her going. Iyengar Yoga was founded by B. K. S. Iyengar of India and focuses on body alignment and is known for its use of props to accomodate students of all abilities, promote deeper understanding of poses and allow for longer holds in poses for restorative work.
There is free, convenient parking in the Blackport Building parking lot on Diamond Avenue. Street parking is available on Lake Drive. You may enter the building from either the Diamond Avenue or Lake Drive entrance.

Serving Grand Rapids, Michigan and the surrounding communities of East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Township, Ada, Byron Center, Cascade, Comstock Park, Forest Hills, Grandville, Hudsonville, Kentwood, Lowell, Plainfield Township, Rockford, Walker and Wyoming.
An essential yoga prop, sticky mats provide a stable non-slip surface for your home or studio practice. The most versatile yoga prop, these blankets provide assistance in shoulderstand, sitting poses, restorative poses and relaxation. Bolsters are a wonderful addition to any restorative practice and great for chest support in pranayama.

This is a great yoga place. Good teachers, lovely space.

I like the gentle yoga class - the certified instructor is also a physical therapist.

This is the real deal. The instructors are very knowledgeable and helpful. They are able to make adjustments to the poses in order to accommodate the individual. Several are also trained physical therapists, which is a huge asset. This studio has been around for many years, and there's a good reason for that. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed.
