The Brightleaf Building
Located in the highly sought after neighborhood of Upper Ghent, The Brightleaf Building, originally an old tobacco warehouse, was completely renovated in 2017 to be premier apartment homes, and features a pool, fitness center, and onsite leasing office! The Building, located on the corner of 22nd Street and Monticello Avenue, you get the best of both worlds!

Brightleaf is not only in the Ghent neighborhood, but it is also walking distance to tons of awesome restaurants, bars, and shops! Just an quick walk to O'Connor Brewing, Mermaid Winery, 80/20 Burger Bar, and of course, Doumar's famous ice cream shop. However, there are too many restaurants and shops in walking distance to list!

Thin walls, extremely loud neighbors - you can hear normal conversation (and most of the time the neighbors are yelling and blaring music, well into the early and even late am), entire apartment smells like what the neighbors are smoking every single day.
Management is decent, maintenance comes when needed, they try and send emails out to curb the noise etc but no one listens. If you work in the morning and need to sleep I’d avoid this place.
beautiful building

This has been one of the most phenomenal living experiences that I have had thus far. The professional staff is amazing, and you are walking distance to some of the best dining and leisure spots in Norfolk. The Brightleaf Building is top-notch!!❤️

Since management seems so focused on re-angling reviews on Google to make themselves look better, and not responding to actual direct requests, here is a 2 week old vomit pile in the stairwell. I'll add one per day for every day it's still not handled.

My husband and I have lived here for almost 3 years and I would say like with most things in life there are pros and cons to this building.
Pros:
The apartments are stunning inside. We love the huge windows, hardwood floors, and high ceilings. Also in comparison with some of the other apartments in the downtown area you get more square feet for your money which is nice.
We also love how the rent is all inclusive, made paying our bills incredibly easy.
The location is great! We are about 5 minutes to downtown Norfolk and only a few streets over from what is arguably the cutest part of the city

I’ve been here for about 3 weeks now. I was skeptical about moving here due to the reviews but was enticed by the high ceilings, exposed beams, and overall attractiveness of the apartments.. so I signed!
I will say yes the halls smell like a certain smoke occasionally (you live in the city, it’s expected)
The surrounding area is generally fine in my opinion and it’s very close to shops, restaurants, etc
Could I see my car window getting smashed? Sure. Could I see that happening anywhere in the city? Absolutely....
The noise level is about what I expected given the thinner walls the “restored

Terribly cared for property - Trash has been an ongoing issue for at least a year (All I can speak to)
It is overfilled, blowing disgusting trash all throughout the property and the city and now attracting rodents.
If you have pets at all - Its extremely unsafe and unsanitary for them to walk in the property due to all the trash and disease, not to mention them tracking that inside the building.

Don't get me wrong, this place is not horrible and upon move-in, i was absolutely in love. The interior is gorgeous with the very tall ceilings and the huge window(s). The floor plans of the apartments are really open and are prime for customizing your places how you want it to be. But after living here for a year and some change, we have noticed many faults with this building. The first thing that anyone with ears will notice is how paper thin the walls are and how you can hear everything that goes on in your neighbors lives. Upstairs, downstairs, left or right, you can hear all of your neighbors

The apartment building is gorgeous! All the tenants so far have been super friendly. Ms Sheila, the building manager, is SUPER nice and funny. She was extremely helpful with the move in process and made everything super easy!
