Gabriel's Bakery
We are a family owned and operated wholesale bakery that specializes in artisan hand-crafted breads, bagels, and pastries. Owner / Bread Master, Amilcar Alvarez, immigrated to Portland from Peru in 1979 when he fell in love with an American student traveling abroad. Leaving behind law school in Peru to join his new wife, Amilcar started working from the bottom up at a small Portland french bakery.

He excelled at his new job, and began to experiment with sustainable whole grains, an idea that was just beginning to gain popularity, but one he was raised with in the Peruvian countryside. In 1987, Amilcar realized his dream and opened Gabriel's Bakery, naming it after his new born son. Since then, Amilcar has incorporated baking ideas from his Latino heritage, French training, and even his wife's Jewish roots.

I've only tried the bagels, and not impressed. These are like soft rolls, so assuming they cater to a younger generation that aren't aware of what real bagels texture or taste are. Guess they could be used for a PBJ sandwich.

A fixture at many of the Portland Farmer's markets, they sell many varieties of their bread, which are made with earthy grains which I prefer over white flours. Same with their pastries; many have a mixture of flours and are made with less sugar and butter than most bakery items putting them on the light side of sweet. For example, their blackberry scone is very reminiscent of a true British scone that is dry and just lightly sweetened and used as the base for clotted cream and jam, not usually eaten on its own.

The best item in my opinion is the spinach, feta, jalapeño roll. It's

I have just not been satisfied with the breads I've bought here in Portland at New Seasons or Fred Meyer. I want a healthy bread that toasts well (not too hard or too soft after toasting) and good sandwich bread. I just bought their 8-grain at Fred Meyers in the healthfood section and I've found THE perfect bread! It's really tasty, not too thin or too small so you feel hungry after eating the sandwich!. Well-done Gabriel's Bread Company!

A familiar sight at nearly every farmers market in Portland, Gabriel's Bakery offers bread, pastries, and bagels that are reasonably priced and fairly standard. Nothing too fancy. Certainly tasty.

The best thing about Gabriel's is that they're local -- family owned and operated since 1987 -- and their products are made with a variety of whole grains and a mix of organic and sustainable products. No artificial ingredients or preservatives.

As for taste, both their pastries and their bagels lean toward the bready side. Their croissants lack the buttery flakiness of fine pastry, and

Great prices for quality baked goods - it's a good spot for grabbing something on the go. Their almond pastries were especially spot-on.

Went in to inquire about their gluten-free options after seeing this online. The guy working there was snarky and said they don't have any gluten free products. He acted like I was crazy for even suggesting. Apparently the employees aren't even familiar with their own menu and products.

My go-to quick lunch spot. I think they just recently started doing sandwiches but they are hella good and lowkey cheap. Def is a hole in the wall type spot worth a visit.

Please stop calling them Bagels. How about "somewhat okay tasting round rolls with holes in them".

Haven't really come across any real Bagels in Portland. A few near misses but beyond my own homemade ones, nope.

My friend brought some of the three seed bangles over for me to try out. Considering I have a son who LOVES Bagels, he is the true taste tester.
He rated these a 10! So did I as although I don't eat them often once I tired them I decided to pay more as they were WAY better than Costco/Einstein. These were a day old and even left in the fridge once I warmed on toasted them they were perfect, soft and the consistency awesome!
I'm anxious to try the others.

So we just bought poppy seed bagels. It has been a couple of years since we have purchased Gabriels Bagels. The bagel use to have a good chew, but now it tastes like a roll. Did the recipe change?
Sorry, but I am not a fan of this poppy seed bagel.

I hope they start accepting credit cards at the farmers market. I've had to walk away from those delicious pumpkin bread squares way too many times.

Every time I go, I tell myself I'll try some thing new, but why when the alfajores cookie is so perfect. The dulce se leche is unique and rich, the Cookie moist yet crumbly. I buy two. One for right then and one for the road

OK, let me address their bagels. First I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoy Gabriel's Bakery Bagels. They toast well, they are tasty, and they make fantastic hamburger buns. Sure, from a purist's point of view (and I *am* a bagel purist) they are not bagels. But they're so tasty I'm willing to forgive them the name!

I just wish they were at the Oregon Square Farmer's Market today because my whole dinner was planned around their onion bagels. 80(

Their other baked goods are very good too. Whatever you get from there won't disappoint.

Ah, so they are famous for their bagels?

Gabriel's Bakery is a frequent vendor at the OHSU farmer's market every Tuesday, the day when I eagerly look forward to lunch time so I can get my blueberry almond scone from them. You can't miss those scones. They sit inside a classic wooden framed glass case next to some humongous cinnamon rolls, croissants, muffins, coffee cakes, cookies, etc., seducing you with their elegantly pampered faces. For $2-3.5, you get a pastry the size of an adult hand (if not larger)!

Unlike generic baked goods that loom your senses with pounds of butter

People in Portland know NOTHING About bagels. What Gabriels sells is not even close to being a bagel. Calling them bagels is false advertising.

I found THE best coconut macaroons with chocolate. That was like having your first . . . . (fill in the blanks), this was @ the Parkrose Farmer's Market.

I don't like macaroons that much, but who doesn't love chocolate! I've tasted other macaroons, elsewhere, but theirs just can't compare. We also tried making our own version, by adding chocolate, but theirs is still BETTER! At least now, we can make them ourselves! Maybe, like any snacks, they taste better when someone does the baking/cooking!

Every time I stop by the PSU Saturday Farmer's Market, I get something from Gabriel's. Usually it's a piece of their large, inexpensive, phenomenal carrot cake that has some many nuts, raisins, etc. in it that I'm not really sure what holds it all together. If you like dem baked goods, Gabriel's is a must stop.

Oh Gabriel!!
Your Quinoa Bread has changed my life. I was once a poor... wait, STARVING musician. Now i sit on a leather couch surrounded by beautiful ladies, rubbing my belly with complete satisfaction.
I first found your delicious bread at Food Front co-op on NW Thurman, then I later discovered you at the Farmer's Market in the Pearl. THEN at PSU on Saturdays!! Is that really you behind the register at the market? Gabriel?? I am too nervous to say hello, and to say... thank you.
Your Qunioa Bread has made living in Portland sexier than I could have ever imagined....
