Helen Bernhard Bakery was established in 1924, beginning, as many bakeries did in those early days, by baking cakes for neighbors and friends. At the time, the Bernhard family lived in the house next to the present shop. Ben Bernhard's father was a minister at Grace Lutheran Church and his mother, Helen, created the cake business as a hobby and an addition to the family's income.

We make an extensive variety of cakes that are listed on the site. Due to the large batches we make we cannot make custom flavors. However, by combining our extensive list of cake flavors with our equally extensive list of flavored icings and fillings, you are sure to find a combination to satisfy your tastes.

Yesterday, January 27th, I had the good fortune of running into my favorite bakery in the world, Helen Bernhard’s, to get a tasty treat for a special co-worker who was going on maternity leave. I was amazed at the especially beautiful cakes in the display case and was informed that it was National Chocolate Cake Day. One of the local TV stations was scheduled to film a segment but due to a major police happening the film crews were not available so it was cancelled. I purchased this Lemon Meringue Pie Saturday and I couldn't have have been more disappointed. It's always been such a treat to visit Helen Bernhard and my partner has always went to them a few times a year to get cupcakes for all his staff at OHSU. The Meringue was very flat and overall the pie had an odd flavor that nobody was able to identify. Maybe it was old or something but definitely not good at all

We used Helen Bernhard for our wedding cakes! The cakes were stunning and exactly what we asked for. We loved the bakery because the cake flavors were simple and delicious, they had a ton of variety, and the frosting is the perfect amount of sweetness. The main cake is decorated to resemble henna and the grooms cake is Manchester United themed. Thank you so much for the wonderful cakes!

While waiting for our table at the Cadillac Cafe, we wandered down the street and stumbled on this cute little bakery! We grabbed a couple frosted sugar cookies for the road, which were soft and chewy and delicious! We even scored a free sugar cookie for checking in on Yelp! Double bonus!
Everything in the case looked amazing, so I can see us coming back for more goodies in the future! Everyone was polite, helpful and friendly. Great place, will be back!

Where to begin..
This was my first time purchasing from HBB. Part of the reason I wanted to work with them is because they support The Blanchet House and have donated baked treats for people in need. I called them up a week before and got info on what was needed. I then emailed them with a ton of details (photo examples, a list of prioritized options, a photo from their site) while also noting that I wanted the decorator to have artistic and creative freedom. HBB called me back a couple days later with an estimate and I gave them the OK. I picked up the cake this morning

Came here on a Sunday morning to take advantage of the lower priced items. The bakery is in a great location with large front-facing windows that let in a glorious amount of morning sunlight. Parking is super easy, there are two lots on either side of the bakery as well as street parking. The bakery has a fantastic array of options, from breads to cookies, doughnuts, cakes, and more.
