Haegeles Bakery
Haegele's Bakery is an old-fashioned German corner store bakeshop, nestled in the heart of Mayfair, Philadelphia. We are a fourth generation, family owned business in continuous operation since 1930. It is with great pride and a commitment to quality, that we continue to offer a full-line of handmade delicacies and desserts, made in the same fashion as our first generation.

Come visit us on the little corner of Erdrick & Barnett Streets and experience a taste of yesteryear baked fresh today!
Services
In 1927 German immigrant, August Haegele arrived in America with nothing but his dream of starting a bakery business. In about the same year, Helen Gildein, American born but resident of Hungary, returned to America with nothing but the desire to retain her American citizenship. No time for a honeymoon.
We are a full-line bakeshop making everything from bread & rolls to fancy decorated cakes. All our items are made fresh on our premise from scratch recipes that have withstood the test of time. With variety as a signature, our menu changes from day to day, week to week, and season to season. Some items like Sticky-Buns are made every day, while others like Fastnachts are made just once a year.
Fastnacht is the day of feasting and celebration before the Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday. For those unfamiliar with the Lenten season, it is a quieter time in the Church as the days that lead up to Easter are set aside for prayer, self discipline and the religious practice of fasting. Many people "give something up" for Lent, and often it's sweets.

Ran in to get a few treats for the family. Their donuts are real good, cream & jelly too. They are made smaller now, and the price is up to $1.25 apiece. I also got a 1/4 cheesecake too. First time trying it there. It was good, we all shared it after dinner. It had a lot of cherries on the bottom though, instead of less cherries, more cheesecake on top. It was like eating a cherry pie with a little cheese topping. Should revamp that recipe to make it more cheesecake, less cherries... I will return though..

I grew up smelling the baking from here. Despite being away for 46 years I still dream of their pastries. Sticky buns , jelly tarts, butter cakes, etc. I try to stop by whenever I'm in philly. Nothing compares to their flavor. God, I miss living near this bakery

It was my first time at Haegle's and I was having a day! I got lost getting there, my son ran into the street without looking and almost got hit by a car, and then we had a power struggle over cupcakes.
When we finally made our decision, we found out it was cash only...they were so nice!
They fronted the cookies and Buttercake w a handwritten IOU.
Who DOES that anymore?
It reminded me of my hometown in the Midwest.
The service was great, the Buttercake was AMAZING!
I was tempted to buy another when I returned with cash to pay my debt ...but you know ...girly figure and all that fun stuff

It was an ok place. I found some of the pastries on the dry side. I did enjoy the cake called the bienenstich or butter cake. Its a yellow cake filled with vanilla cream and the top is covered with almonds drizzled with honey.

Ordered an orange pound birthday cake early August, it was delicious but, when we picked it up, we also bought 2 jelly donuts that had hardly any jelly in them!!!! We ordered another orange birthday cake and picked it up today, it was NOT fresh like the one last month. Also bought a few slices of extremely dry Washington cake, we threw them out! The butter cookies were good. I'm writing this bakery off, they're expensive anyway. I don't mind paying for quality!

Super kind and helpful. The strawberry shortcake was a slice of HEAVEN. I'm not a cake person, but I couldn't get enough of it. And neither could my 1 year old. She ate the entire piece and licked the plate clean. Thank you!!

We ordered the Black Forest cake for a birthday. It was amazing. So fluffy and not overly sweet. The cream used was light and unlike the normal cake frosting, this was light, airy and much less sweet than frosting. Service is impeccable. I unfortunately don’t even the name of the super nice lady that served me, but thank you!
Will come back to try their other pastries. Oh, cash only

Not to sweet, which my family prefers. They loved it! It was first eaten alone, but vanilla ice cream complemented it very well! It was a little messy slicing it, especially the next day, but my young sons didn't mind. I've never heard of this bakery before, but based on the Peach Crumble, we can recommend. Without question.

I’ve lived in Mayfair since 2006 and yesterday as the first time I tried this bakery. The French jelly twists were delicious!!!! The cupcakes were just OK but the hazelnut torte was really tasty! Cream donuts were good but not as good as Holmesburg Bakery’s cream donuts! The staff is very nice!

We stopped by here because I've been craving for a fastnacht styled donut. My coworker brought the fastnacht donuts in previous years, and it was so delicious and fluffy and satisfying! Though it's not Far Tuesday yet, I went in hoping that they have something similar. The bakery is on a corner in a residential area. We went on Friday afternoon and saw plenty of street parking. We went in and the lady greeted us immediately. I asked about the donut and she suggested their jelly donuts and cream donuts would be the closest to the fastnacht. I also saw what seemed to be chocolate glazed donut. She

Old (since 1930), clean, authentic bakery that puts your orders inside of a classic, white, sturdy paper box, and then they securewith string fed from a hanging steel canister. Excellent butter cake, Washington cake, etc.

I didn't visit the store but was given several donuts on Shrove Tuesday. These donuts are also known as fasnachts. The donuts are yeast donuts made with potato flour. They are not particularly sweet and were dusted with cinnamon sugar. They were tasty but not enough for me to line up before dawn to get them as was seen on the news.

I discovered this place about 2 years ago and was surprised at how great they are. With so many old time bakeries closing in the city, glad to see this one is still around. A traditional German bakery, their pastries are excellent, and the vanilla creme donuts are crazy good. They also do great seasonal desserts throughout the year. I always try to stop by when in the area for some great desserts, Prost!

This bakery has been operated at the same location, by the same family since 1930. This alone should tell you how attentive and wonderful the family is who runs this establishment. My family has been going here since the 1950's. Now I take my children here. Try the fruit pies!!! By far their best item, the jelly sticks. If you want to try some superb German Pastries, then this is place is a MUST!!!

Diamond in the rough. I was told it is a family owned business of four generations. So many different choices pleasing to the eye. The pastries are out of this world and the prices are cheaper than a grocery store. Very clean and well-kept bakery.

I got my daughters graduation cake here this weekend. When I ordered the cake the girl was very nice and helpful. When I picked it up the girl at the counter was not very friendly. However the cake did look nice, I feel they did a good job on the decorating of it. I got a chocolate chip poundcake with buttercream frosting. The cake was very dry and disappointing. Some of the guests said it was the worst cake they had ever had. I would Definitely not order another pound cake from here.

Best brownies EVER.
I've been eating desserts from Haegeles ever since my stepmother moved to the Mayfair area about 24 years ago. The quality and taste have not changed. Their pina colada pie and chocolate chip cookies are other favorites in my family.
A great, reliable, family-owned bakery.

My grandmother use to take my sister and I here when we were young. We always would get the "smiley face" cookies. Since then, I have loved this bakery! Nothing compares! My mom loves their doughnuts, my hhsband loves their brownies. The Washington cake, chocolate logs, blueberry cupcakes, apple cake are all amazing! I love the pretzels they sell for New Years as well. They made my wedding cake. It was chocolate chip with buttercream. It was beautiful and delicious!

This was my first time stopping in after living in the area for nearly 20yrs. Don't let the small bakery fool you. This place packs big flavor. It has everything from cookies and donuts to strudels and cakes. I decided to go with a Philadelphia tradition and try the butter cake. One bite and I was hooked. It was fresh, rich and creamy. Hands down one of the best butter cakes I've ever tried. I'll be back!
