What matters is what you CAN do, not what you can't do. Begin with what you can do and build from there, don't waste time worrying about what you can no longer do. Using the Pilates Method to connect with the body in a positive, integrated way can change your health, your mind and your spirit. Before beginning her Pilates career, Kathleen was a professional jazz dancer.
In 1985 she began studying with and working for Elizabeth Jones Boswell at the Physical Conditioning Center in Houston, Texas. She learned protocols for moving people from rehab to fitness. In 1990 Kathleen moved to Los Angeles and over the years has worked with 100s of people, young and old. Pilates Method to address scoliosis has been published in an article for the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

Through my experiences I have discovered a profound wisdom; When we help others we help ourselves. I find it deeply rewarding that I can help people truly enjoy living in their bodies by helping them be pain free or simply feel strong, flexible and empowered. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to help someone not only do a fun sport or physical activity they love, but perhaps really shine at it!
My experience has taught me that there are very few personal trainers/exercise instructors who have "injury consciousness". This is to say that above all else their focus is NEVER to cause injury. Kathleen Carman is one of those very few. She has an uncanny ability to see into the body and instructs her clients from a vantage point that others cannot.

In 1996, I was referred to Kathleen Carman by my chiropractor, who was treating me for full-body pain. At the time, I had suffered from severe scoliosis for 24 years and a nine-segment fusion of my spine for 21 years. My pain levels had become unbearable. I immediately noticed the benefits of the Pilates exercises that Kathleen customized for my condition, and she developed a home program upon releasing me from her care. Twenty-three years later, there were structural, scoliosis-related changes in my body that started causing severe pain again. When my orthopedist referred me to a physical therapy

I worked in the fitness industry for over 20 years, including 8 years as a full-time Pilates instructor and business owner, so I consider myself adept at knowing quality instruction when I see it. From the moment I started working with Kathleen, she demonstrated her true knowledge of how to really get you working the right muscles in the right way - a key factor that differentiates Pilates from other types of workouts that aren't as mindful. In a city of endless bootcamps and fads, Kathleen's classical yet somehow still VERY contemporary approach to the practice of Pilates is a sea of

I have had the pleasure of Kathleen's instruction in both private coaching and a class setting. She is extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and she is also personable and inspiring. (Check out her book, The Gentle Bridge.) Anyway, I find her to be very intuitive. She seems to know just what you need to do to feel better.

What. A. Godsend!
I am so thankful to have found Kathleen after going to SEVEN different people including doctors, a physical therapist, an acupuncturists and multiple chiropractors to rehabilitate a shoulder injury.
She met me where I was at and took so much care to find exactly the right exercises to help me heal. I finally have hope that I will be able to gain strength and become as athletic as I once was. She has taught me how to move my body in a new way and it has been a profound experience.
I can't recommend her enough. She's way more than a Pilates instructor, she's an

I had gone to a few pilates instructors before I found Kathleen. When I started going to Kathleen I saw the difference immediately. She is not a one size fits all instructor. Kathleen is far more than that. She really understands the body and puts together a program that addresses your particular needs. I would recommend her unequivocally.

Kathleen Carman is more than a Pilates instructor. She is a healer and a teacher. I had never done Pilates before and was a bit afraid because I have had so many physical injuries. But she was thorough and gentle and explained every step to me. She not only understands bodies, but she understands people. I learned so much and could feel the difference right away. Plus she is a joy to work with. I highly recommend Beyond Pilates.
