Founded by Atos 3rd degree black belt Jonathan "JT " Torres, Essential Jiu Jitsu and Fitness is a world class training environment.
We offer a 3,000 square foot facility, complete with men's and women's locker rooms, where you can find jiu jitsu training and instruction, solidly grounded in the foundations of the martial art. If you have any questions other than than what you find below, please don't hesitate to contact us. All potential new students residing within the tri-state (NY, NJ, CT) area are eligible to try our free trial. Students may access any classes within their experience level during the trial. Proof of residency is required.

White uniforms are required for all our general classes, other affiliation patches are not permitted. The "Essential Jiu Jitsu" No-Gi uniforms are required for all our general no-gi classes. Essential Jiu Jitsu is located in the charming hamlet of Harstdale, NY (22 miles outside of NYC) in West Chester County.
Physical activity is a crucial part of a child's growth and development. Jiu jitsu in particular offers a multitude of benefits that will help your child grow to become a confident, successful and productive adult. We have designed our kid's programs to be interactive, motivational, challenging, and fun.

So after months of hearing about this place from my coach (who is a member), I decided to come up for a visit. The facility is beautiful and more importantly... it's clean!
Got to attend a No-Gi class, everyone was very welcoming. The owner is a World Champion... so the training was amazing, JT was able to breakdown a complex series of movements into bite sized pieces that were easy to understand.
If you're local, you should join, if you're a visitor like me, you should definitely drop by. I plan to visit again!

So I was visiting some family in Scarsdale and decided to to come and train here. They were very accommodating, and I felt like the price was reasonable considering the world class training I was receiving. Good group of people, tough training, skilled instructors, excellent facilities, and I even had the opportunity to do a round with JT Torres. He used measured effort to say the least but what a treat to feel what a world champion feels like.- it was a long 5 minutes. His positive attitude and warmth are infectious throughout the gym. If I lived within an hour of this school I would train there

Professor JT Torres runs a tight ship! I enjoyed watching the discipline he promotes in his students. The facility is open and airy with a lot of natural light flowing in & is aesthetically pleasing. The neighborhood has lots of shops and restaurants, from pizza, to sushi, to Mexican. The metro North line is conveniently located at the base of the street. Just seems like an ideal location to have such a high level BJJ facility. I wonder if the community of Hartsdale, NY realizes the gem they have in their backyard. Well, I certainly do & will def be back.

Notice the 5 stars and the comment Yelp gives right after it? Woohoo! As good as it gets! My son has had the privilege of training with JT Torres, the owner/professor of Essential Jiu Jitsu.
You literally cannot ask for a better more experienced instructor for adults or children. Hartsdale is so fortunate to have a true Brazilian jiu jitsu world champion in their midst, so please take advantage of it.
There are few people in the world that match JT's ability to compete, train, and effectively communicate with students. If you want to learn BJJ, this is the place.
