Though we charge a quarterly fee, we are essentially non-commercial. This means that we do not depend on having a high number of students, and, because class size is limited, we can offer more personalized instruction. We can also be more selective in our membership. We also reserve the flexibility to adjust fees when the situation warrants, even to use funds to provide occasional scholarships for special out-of-school seminars.
We respect studios that teach children; the martial arts can contribute to their personal development and gets them away from their computers. And, after all, that's where the money is. However, because we are non-commercial, we can choose to teach what we offer only to adults and mature teens. We would not teach most of our techniques to children or to those seeking to dominate others, i.e., childish adults.

We boast one of the best Instructional Staffs you'll find anywhere. Each has spent 10-30 years in the arts and each is very supportive of and attentive to all of our students. Meet them and you'll be impressed, not only with their skills but with their character. Over the years, they have become invaluable members of our Ryu Shu Kan family.
We offer classes in women's safety and self-defense. While the training involves practical physical skills, psychological, emotional and communication elements are emphasized. The world answers to our concepts of it - and of ourselves. We begin by examining ourselves in relation to the world we inhabit.
The above, like many of those "As-Seen-On-TV" products, may sound too good to be true - like a gourmet meal without the calories! However, though these are merely the goals of the course, I assure you that you will be offered the tools to achieve them.
Initially designed for Seniors, the program is well-suited to those of any age who wish to benefit from the time-tested principles distilled from the Arts but who choose not to undergo the rigors and discipline of a formal class in combat or self-defense.The 6 hour-long sessions will provide techniques that can enhance many aspects of one's daily life at home or on the job.

I have studied various martial arts over the years and, I can truly say that the Ryu Shu Kan Karate dojo is one of the finest schools around. Sensei Philyaw has created a class which allows learning in a stress free, relaxed, hard working environment. EGO’S are left at the door, and find no place in the school. The class nurtures personal growth, along with expertise in the Martial Arts. Elements of power, relaxation, self-defense, meditation, and discipline are some of the areas which are covered. Overall, I find it a supportive, fun learning environment!

I have been a member of this dojo for many years, and I have to say that the experience has been transforming. The training given by Senseis Lynn Philyaw, Cyndee Philyaw and Peter Katris is absolutely stellar. Whether one's ambition is to learn effective self defense (as opposed to flashy but ultimately useless faux "self defense"), to cope with personal issues, or to develop confidence in one's personal life, this dojo is definitely the one to join. As a bonus, you will develop a number of lifelong friendships through the dojo.
