Pilates Barre & Jams
At Pilates Barre & Jams, we are decolonizing pilates by making it more accessible for the people. All classes are deliberate-paced. What the heck does that mean? Deliberate (n.) slow, unhurried, steady, as though allowing time for decision on each individual action involved.

Like a Sunday drive, Teresa uses imagery, metaphor, and other stuff to challenge you to connect with the juiciness of the work --- including details about the form, alignment, or movement of an exercise. She may slow the tempo, or pause the class to explain a concept, and if the synergy is just right, Teresa has been known to speed up the pace for 1 or 2 exercises.
Services
I'm Teresa (She/Her Femme), Oakland, CA born and where I currently live. I have been teaching fitness since 2008 and ever since then, my goal has been to make movement available and accessible to the people who never felt comfortable walking into a status quo studio because the staff and participants would be a**holes if the person didn't fit the aesthetic.
Teresa understands that each body has its own mark of fitness and she works to bring that out. Fun, funny, and fabulous you want to workout because it's time spent with a great friend! Teresa's class is the best part of my day: she makes me laugh, helps me have fun, makes me strong, pushes me, helps me appreciate my body.
Come as you are, you will not be left behind, and you will not be asked to complete more than you are capable of doing safely. People of all ages, abilities, and orientations are welcome to participate. I teach to all skill levels, so whether you're a novice or a pro, all of the classes/sessions will challenge you to your own personal fitness level.
Pilates Barre & Jams offers a Pay-What-You-Can and Sponsorship option for a monthly unlimited Pilates Mat class pass. Please note we have a limited amount of these passes available and they are distributed on a first come, first served basis. You will be automatically added to the waitlist, and informed when a spot opens up for you.
In this episode Nia chats with two queer Black business owners, athletic trainer Mike Watkins and Pilates instructor Teresa Ellis, to find out. They also discuss creating fat-positive fitness spaces, working with disabled clients, and ways they try to make their services accessible to low-income folks who want to work out.

Teresa, her classes, and the community she's created are amazing! Like change-your-life-for-the-better, rock-your-world amazing. Full of verve and also warm, welcoming, challenging, and fun.

When I walked in to my first session with Teresa a couple years ago, I had a lot of pain and stiffness in my body and sadness in my spirit. She helped make me stronger and more resilient, physically and emotionally. She literally and figuratively helped me stand taller.

As a person in a larger body, I've struggled to find a trainer with whom I feel comfortable and who doesn't see my body

This right here is the best workout for strengthening, lengthening and feeling oh so good in your body! Teresa creates a space for every BODY to thrive and be welcome, cherished and supported. What you will find at PB&J: a supportive, diverse, fun, caring and committed community of badassery in all shapes and sizes. What you won't find: snooty lululemon-wearing white ladies with botox and a superiority complex. Now that we're in the COVID19 online world, I have been taking Teresa's classes online and it is the only online fitness class where I feel like I'm getting
