Considering the price I am extremely underwhelmed and confused how this place is popular?
-Tempura batter is awful, improve it and include a from scratch sauce on side.
-Ginger is not fresh.
-The wasabi stiff and old.
-Salmon and Tuna sashimi cuts were fatty and small. Oh and include a lemon as garnish, come on that's just basic.

First time trying Ryoshin. They have very limited hours, as in 3 hours open today. The prices are not for the faint of heart. I ordered 2 rolls for $37 and change after taxes. The food quality is excellent and taste is great, but portions are small for what you pay. I tried to give a size comparison for the rolls. The 49'er roll is $18.95 and cucumber roll (forget the exact name) was $13.95. The cucumber makes for a very refreshing bite.

$19.50 for a 49er roll that didn't even have lemon on it.

It's $5.85 for a salmon roll and $7.10 for california. You might be better off ordering both of these and getting a lemon from the store. Or, you could just go to Sushi Monster and get the same roll for $16.99 (they call it Oregon Roll).

What they do right:
- Price as if they were high end sushi

What they are terrible at:
- Selecting quality inventory
- Making sushi rice
- Making sushi
(the mayonnaise and kimchi are a huge tip-off)

Remedy:
- Do yourself a HUGE favor, save any $ you would waste at this garbage hut and head over to YUZU or YOSHIZUMI in San Mateo, or KUSAKABE in SF, or expand your Japanese pallet with a trip to RANZAN in Redwood City, etc. (places that respect your $, respect themselves, and know what they are doing).

We discovered Ryoshin during COVID. The local sushi restaurants just weren't cutting it anymore. After moving to the Bay Area from the east coast we've struggled to find a good sushi place across the board.

Enter Ryoshin. It's glorious. We have not had a bad roll and I think we've tried them all at this point. The rolls are the perfect size, not too big and not too small. The rice is perfect and isn't too sticky and doesn't overwhelm the rolls. They've had a great variety of appetizers including flights of different types of sashimi (tuna and salmon).

I want to give my local business another try and oh boy, did I make a bad decision. I thought after a few years have passed, things would get better as the recent reviews have been mostly positive.

TLDR- I was constantly in the bedroom after the meal (I will spare you with the details). Other reviewers have also commented on this but I thought nah... What would be the odd....I think someone should really inspect this place to ensure consumers safety.

It's too bad this review came in the time like this but I believe food safety is the #1 priority.

In addition to safety, look at this

After 3 visits I can confidently say that this place consistently delivers fresh and flavorful sushi. I am not a big fish lover because I don't like the fishy taste. But I can eat some if it is not fishy tasting (which means FRESH). So fresh is the #1 thing I look for when eating sushi. Ryoshin delivers on this.

We ordered four orders of cut sushi rolls. This included the Unagi Avocado, Spicy Salmon (with cucumber), and the Spicy Hamachi (with cucumber). All were really good. And did I say fresh?

The Unagi Avocado (with unagi sauce) was the most interesting because of the creaminess

Tasty sushi spot that is a regular in our rotation. We really like the oshizushi they have and usually order the salmon and scallop ones along with another fusion roll to make it a meal for 2. The oshizushi usually holds together pretty well, but the scallop one was all falling apart this time. Nevertheless, doesn't affect the taste.

This time we also tried the Belmont roll, and I was a fan! Could clearly taste the smoky seared flavor of the salmon. We've also tried fusion rolls w the kimchi juice which I thought was ok, but didn't love.

I'd suggest calling in to order and

Can't say enough good things about Ryoshin. I was lucky enough to dine in pre-covid and the staff was really friendly and pretty quick to serve. The fish always tastes fresh and portion wise are generous. I do prefer delivery though, especially since the restaurant is so small and would get crowded when dine in was still available.

I've ordered take out probably 5 times now and each time they are very good about keeping the public safe. They have signage everywhere informing people to keep a distance as they wait outside. They also have a plastic barrier at the pickup counter and hand

I've only gotten delivery during COVID shutdowns, but it was awesome.

My fiancé and I split the 12-piece omakase and a seared MI roll. Both were fantastic. The fish in the omakase was incredibly high quality and while it was only six types (two pieces of each), the variety was way better than the usual. It wasn't just the classic salmon and tuna and whatnot, but more exotic varieties as well. The fatty salmon was SO good. The MI roll was also great, loved the smoke on it, and it was stuffed to the gills.

I can't wait to order again and hopefully, go in person one day!

Ordered on a Thursday night for scheduled takeout. There was a good amount of parking outside. I got a lion king roll, a ryoshin roll, a summer roll, a juicy roll, and a hokkaido scallop oshizushi.

Everything was amazing and fresh and just melted in your mouth. I should've looked closer at the menu though because three of the rolls were basically a variation on a california roll.

The lion king was rich. It just broke in my mouth. Because it's covered by tin foil, it stayed warm during the drive home.

Ryoshin roll had a good kick to it. It was rich as well. Fish was super fresh. Juicy

I've tried this place twice and I loved each time. Ryoshin could honestly be my go to sushi spot now that I'm in Belmont.

I was unsure about ordering at first because sushi is usually a hit or a miss and you never really know if the fish will be fresh or not... well, I got it. AND IT WAS SO GOOD. Prices are kind of high for the portions, but the fish is fresh and worth it.

I opted for their Chirashi bowl (perfect amount of rice, does not overdo it at all), salmon belly nigiri, and baked lion king roll. Everything was good. Did not disappoint.

Sashimi looked okay, but the texture was not fresh that was too soft and seemed frozen for a bit time. Total cost $120+ before tips, way overpriced given the below-expectation quality of raw fish. Dessert was compliment but tasted great.

Simply wow, best shrimp tempura we have ever had. Omakase variety was perfect and so fresh and so so so good! Lastly get the hamachi appetizer!!!

Parking is non existent so double park on 5th Street is your friend

Recommendation would be that pick up be easier by letting those who food is ready to grab their stuff instead of who's first in line.

A friend recommended this place to me awhile ago but I didn't get a chance to go until recently during COVID SIP even though it's less than 10 minutes away from me. There's so many items to choose from this small place which looks there was only a few small tables pre COVID. I did takeout and the phone ordering was easy and my order was ready very quickly for pickup. The fish here is very tasty and fresh. If you want high quality fish at a reasonable price, this is the place to go in San Mateo. They also have wooden press non seaweed oshizushi which I tried for the first time. This

I’m not sushi person, but this place definitely eliminates my bias in raw seafood!!!
It’s a very small store with only 12 seats on CA-82. There are a few street parking spots in the front and at back as well. We were lucky when we arrived there on Saturday afternoon that there was no line.
We ordered a combination omakase coming with 10 pieces of nigiri and a dessert at end. The sushi are very fresh and amazing. I don’t even need to dip sushi in soy sauce.
Absolutely a hidden gem in San Carlos area.

My favorite sushi spot only because they are one of the few places that have seared oshi sushi ( pressed sushi )! Its a small establishment with only 7-8 tables. Ive only gone here for dinner and its busy but not packed. Its a great hidden sushi gem and we love going here for their great tasting sushi as well as the friendly service. The prices are also reasonable.

There is usually a lot of street parking available.

Great bang for your buck! Quality, service, rice to fish ratio! It's all good!... I take that back! The place is tiny! Like 5 tables!
If you're okay with waiting, or grabbing to go, this is a great inexpensive sushi option.

Ryoshin makes good omakase for a neighborhood sushi restaurant. They are popular for their sushi rolls but have a solid selection of nigiri and have nice omakase weekly specials, like their toro tasting.

Because they have a small dining area, seating for about 12-15, they seem to do a lot of take out versus dining in. Also, there is no sushi bar seating and they don't serve liquor. The prices are reasonable too.

Surprisingly good food quality for what deceivingly looks like a basic no frills restaurant (I eat a lot of good sushi in Japan so I am picky). Fish texture is butter-like and moist. They clearly invested their budget in quality sources of fish. Just don't expect too much in terms of knife-work but the taste is good. Think of yourself getting fresh sushi at a fish market. $45 omakase 10 piece course did not disappoint but I needed to order an extra maki roll to really be filled. Serving sizes are small. Rolls are acceptable and OK but not as impressive as the nigiri ... rolls are Cali Fusion style

Amazing quality and best in San Mateo area. Me a Sushi guy who travels 3 days a week and I would say almost as good as Sushi Kashiba in Seattle for way less price. Uni grade A (WOW) and Omakase.

Pretty good omakase for a neighborhood sushi restaurant. they are probably more popular for their sushi rolls versus nigiri. and probably more popular for take out versus eating in. you see, the restaurant is small and no sushi bar and they don't serve alcohol. you can see why now the omakase experience is lessened based on that. still, the price is decent and not having to drive to the city is another plus. definitely good until your next big splurge in the city.

Even though I've been here quite a number of times now, I've been hesitant to write a review because, selfishly, I don't want to give away what is probably the best kept secret in the Bay. However, I feel I owe it to my fellow elites and the super nice people at Ryoshin to spread the word.

This is probably the best value omakase I have ever had. The fish is consistently fresh and delicious, the knife skills are amazing and I love the way they use the torch to extract the flavors of the fish. It is a perfect balance without being overwhelming or "cooked"

Things you should know first:
- This place is small, only a few tables for seating for groups of 2-4. It's easier to just do takeout.
- Their nigiri/sashimi is the thing to get
If you're craving fresh fish, then check this place out. I was pleasantly surprised by their quality and selection of fish. It's also very reasonably priced (though I did find their dons/bowls to be on the smaller side for portion size). I would definitely recommend ordering their nigiri/sashimi since they have a rotating fresh selection of fish to choose from. I loved their salmon selection since they have such a variety

This place is a very cozy hole in the way right off of the el Camino real. The outside might look kinda shady, but the food is absolutely incredible.
I've never been disappointed from ryoshin. They offer a wide variety of fish and nigiris as well as some fusion rolls. I've gotten the 10 piece nigiri twice and each time my Togo box was packed with delicious fresh fish ranging from smoked salmon to mackral to tamago, which was very good and definitely house made unlike most other sushi restaurants.
