Essex Yacht Club, on the Connecticut River, was founded in 1933 on the principles of friendship and a deep love of yachting. Then as now, our hope is to foster a community of enthusiastic individuals and families brought together through their enjoyment of the boating experience. The mission of the Essex Yacht Club is to promote excellence in yachting activities among its member, including racing, cruising and off-water Club activities.
To accomplish this mission, the Club has developed year-round member activities and programs to promote the Corinthian spirit, the fine traditions of yachting excellence, and the camaraderie of friendship.

Congratulations to all the skippers and crews who competed in the 69th Sam Wetherill Trophy Race, sailing 140 nm from Saybrook Light to Gay Head and back. Blue Skies, skippered by Bill Gunther (Rear Commodore EYC) won the Sam Wetherill Trophy for best overall performance. We are grateful to Matt Myers, and Linda von Rosenvinge for wonderful photos of the race and the club events.
This was the Big Event to celebrate our club's heritage as a premier sailing club and to state its commitment to contributing to a vibrant sailing scene on the sound and on the River. 14 EYC member boats participated - and a record total of 45 boats entered! By the time the Starting gun fired, seven classes of boats were ready to charge the starting line.
The Women's Sailing program is designed to encourage women to get out on the water in the Ideal 18s dinghies - whether they are beginners, want to hone their skills, or even want to race as either skippers or crew. Some women want a relaxed sail on the river, followed by casual dinner with friends; some work towards taking our on-the-water test to become an EYC "Mentor", qualified to take out an Ideal 18 whenever they wish.
The cruise committee is committed to providing a variety of on-water and associated opportunities for club members including sailors, longer-distance cruisers, non-cruising boaters and members who want to engage but don't own boats. Despite Poseidon's furies, we all had an incredible cruise from Essex, to Stonington and then on to Wickford, Bristol, Newport and Cuttyhunk.
