Services
We offer both a Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies and Master of Divinity degree. If completing a degree program is not your end goal, Maitripa College offers the opportunity to take many classes as a Continuing Education (CE) Student. Scholarships and ordained sangha fellowships, flexible schedules, and the attractions of Portland, Oregon, put your affordable graduate degree or continuing education within reach.
A. Maitripa College is committed to keeping our programs accessible to every student who wishes to study here. To that end tuition is a fraction of the cost of comparable graduate programs in the United States. Additionally, we make every effort to consider the financial concerns of each student, and to support their progress through a commitment to flexible payment options and scholarship opportunities.
Completion of the online application form including two letters of recommendation, an essay, statement of interest, resume, transcripts and payment of the application fee (see below). Clear commitment to completing the Maitripa College degree program as evidenced by signing the Enrollment Agreement available at Orientation.
The goal of this eight-week summer course will be gaining the ability to pronounce and read Tibetan sentences. Specifically, we will read and debate in Tibetan the early chapters of Pur-bu-jok's Collected Topics. This text introduces logical reasoning within a framework of Dharmakrti's Commentary on Dignga's Compendium of Valid Cognition and the Buddhist Stra School system of tenets.
Provide Maitripa College with documentation of sufficient financing for at least one year of study, including living expenses and tuition. Sign your I-20 and use it to apply for your F-1 visa at the US Consulate in your home country. After arriving in Portland, you must check-in with the Maitripa College administrative office, bringing your passport, I-94, and I-20 documents, before the term begins.

The special “empowerments“ given by Rinpoche when I studied there were not appropriate for the general public. This includes the accompanied visualizations. Much to advanced and way to energetic. Especially given by a very large Tulku ( Be careful with your energy in this place many people talked about suddenly becoming sick or having terrible health problems after/ or during coming to this school. ) People are from all different places in life and the meditations should be safe and well prepared for the audience. The content of this Buddhist lineage is self harming and harsh . And the old

What a beautiful space and warm, caring people!
I've come here for various events, including teachings with the founder of the college, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and I am very grateful that a place like this exists in the world. Just walking in the door you can sense a peacefulness and a presence and the mind calms and the heart opens.
There is a beautiful antique prayer wheel in the hallway that I really enjoy turning. The main temple has beautiful Buddhist statues and offerings under them. I really enjoyed seeing the Medicine Buddha sand mandala while it was there.
That the college offers

I have attended Maitripa's Thursday night teachings with Yangsi Rinpoche, participated in their Discovering Buddhism Series, attended Sunday morning meditation, and just attended their conflict resolution workshop that is one of the best workshops I've taken part in during my 13-year stay in Portland. The Maitripa community members are wonderful, inviting, and helpful people. The content of the public programs have proven very useful in social work within underserved communities.
In other Buddhist communities, I have felt pushed and judged. I have felt nothing but comfort and acceptance

This is an incredibly unique institution devoted to the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism. There aren't really many other places in the world, let alone the US, that combine the modern scholastic study of Buddhism with emic training in real life application and practice.
Participating in this program as a student, sponsor or volunteer will invariably change your life. Definitely worth checking out.

This young college has developed into a phenomenal resource and learning community for students seeking to start or further their education in compassion, service and meditation through the lens of a time tested Buddhist lineage. This college also draws talented individuals for events year after year, including HH The Dalai Lama just this past spring. Though it has a few kinks to smooth out as it grows, this college deserves a more accurate review:

This as-yet unaccredited college is housed in a nicely converted garage at SE 12th and Market. Maitripa College is a franchise of the international FPMT organization that promotes Tibetan Buddhist education. Each FPMT branch office worldwide is run by an ethnic Tibetan lama (head teacher) with most classes taught by senior students and volunteers from the local country.
The Portland OR base is a tiny college with one classroom plus library downstairs; the FPMT administrative and scripture translating offices are upstairs.

I have been an online student for 2 years, so I am invested and going to finish what I started. The psychology classes taught by Rubin & Vannoy are exceptional. They are responsive to e-mails and provide thoughtful feedback to written assignments. There is a sense howver, that they both have other jobs that are of higher priority, but it doesn't have any major impact on the learning expereince. The meditation classes, taught by Rinpoche and facillitated by Namdrol Adams are an expensive waste of time for online students. The syllabus and instructions invariably arrive later than promised
