Being mentally healthy relies on the ability to disentangle and separate from the "voice" in our head that tells us things that aren't helping us. It's not about "positive thinking, " it's about not taking thoughts so seriously. That's difficult, but can be learned: this is a central task of mindfulness therapy.
Mindfulness-based therapies are among the most current and best-supported psychotherapeutic treatments that are available. Mindfulness teaches that the way to create healthy, positive changes begins by being able to fully experience what is happening in the present moment. Being "mindless" means to be lost, to not pay full attention to what is happening here, now.

Services
We NO LONGER offer counseling services for adolescents (ages 12-17), nor for families or couples. However we still offer psychological testing and evaluations for adolescents as well as adults. We believe that healing occurs best in a friendly, caring environment. Our therapists work to create a warm, supportive space that allows people to feel safe to explore their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and feelings.
This four-week class is suitable for absolute beginners, or a refresher for experienced meditators seeking to deepen their practice. We will explore many tools of mindfulness including sitting meditation instruction and application to everyday life. We draw upon current behavioral psychology as an aid to breaking mindfulness meditation down into 4 skill sets that can be applied anytime throughout your day.
Diagnostic testing to assist in determining psychological diagnosis and recommended course of treatment, for example, to rule-out or rule-in a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder or Asperger's Disorder. Cognitive testing for children and adolescents to help inform educational plans (IEPs), to rule-out or rule-in "Talented and Gifted" qualification, Cognitive Disorder or Mental Retardation, or for adults to gain entry to high-IQ societies such as Mensa.
Mindfulness-based therapy allows you to "go outside the box" and approach your problems and your difficult emotions in a different, more workable way. Stress is not in itself bad, but we have learned to struggle with it in a way that creates additional problems. In therapy you will learn to respond to stress in creative, proactive ways, grounded in the present moment.
Sometimes when one person in a relationship is suffering from depression or anxiety, may be drinking too much, or is becoming burnt out from the demands of work, the relationship as a whole starts to suffer. It's not uncommon for couples to feel stuck in patterns of behavior. Arguing becomes frequent, the sexual relationship is less fulfilling than it used to be, or major changes in life are pulling the couple further and further apart.

Dr. Rhinewine is an absolutely terrific psychologist and therapist. He is kind, warm, non-judgmental, so very smart, creative, open, and insightful. He practices mindfulness-based therapy and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and does both wonderfully. He excels at explaining and implementing his therapeutic guidance and interventions, and his modalities are very supported and successful. He's funny too, and fun to be around. I saw him for years and only left because I had certain special needs that arose that requires a different therapist (and that Dr. Rhinewine, being a consummate
