More than anything, I appreciated the warm, easy-going service and the way the restaurant felt more approachable and less precious than many of its Cal-Italian counterparts in Oakland or Berkeley - despite the fact that the food was just as good and the sourcing of ingredients just as conscientious. The bottom line: Now I have a reason to go to Kensington.

We don't like attaching a specific label to our pizza, but it is closest to the Neo-Neopolitan in style. 11-12 inches and serving 1-2 people depending on appetite. Chef/Owner Peter was inspired by the survey markers his Dad (a geologist) would point out to him as a kid. They are round like pizza and offer unique markers of a specific place, just like our pizza.

I don’t like to leave reviews because that means that this spot will get more busy than it is - but friends, this is my fav brick oven pizza spot in the east bay!!! Everything they make is home made and sooo soo delish. Super cute and family run (maybe it’s just a family run feeling? Idk, but it’s a good feeling.) I also love that they do takeout as well as they do dining in, they have a few outside tables and now and through the last year they are careful about covid precautions, clean and the staff are always well masked.
My favs are the polenta and meatballs, the Benchmark pizza and of

We ate last eve outside at Benchmark. It was very distanced and seemed quite safe.
The two highlights were:
A stellar brown butter lemon mozzarella pizza with fried sage. The crust was perfect, not too thin, chewy and browned but not charred. The toppings , especially the sage, were heavenly.
Secondly, the wine prices per bottle are remarkably lower than the last time we were there (a while ago). We had an Italian Sauvignon Blanc for about $15. It was a perfectly acceptable wine for a casual meal.
Full recommendation for Benchmark.

Always a wonderful experience and great food. Certainly one of the best Caesar salads around. Some nights they may be a bit understaffed if it's unusually busy, but service remains attentive and gracious. Tuesday is free corkage; Thursday is free appetizer with wine purchase. Save room for the soft serve ice cream (with see salt and olive oil).
