Oakland Veterinary Hospital
Dr. Maureen Dorsey is the hospital owner and director. A UC Davis graduate, she began her career in veterinary medicine as a kennel assistant, became a groomer, completed an associates degree in animal health technology, and worked as a virology technician for the Center of Reproduction of Endangered Species at the San Diego Zoo before going to UC Davis for a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.

While attending the college, she also assisted in research of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus in Niels Pederson's laboratory. Dr. Dorsey was an associate veterinarian in the Bay Area before purchasing Oakland Veterinary Hospital in 1995. Dr. Cecilie Hart is also a UC Davis graduate and an avid soccer player and fan.
Services
Oakland Veterinary Hospital provides general veterinary care for dogs and cats. Annual examinations with any necessary vaccines are encouraged and reminders are sent to our clients by post card. A complete physical examination is performed on all patients prior to vaccination and advice regarding nutrition, weight control, exercise requirements, behavior issues, and health maintenance for all stages of your pet's life are discussed.
Fleas have the same life cycle as butterflies, if we understand that we can help keep our pets flea free as much as possible. Flea eggs are found wherever animals with adult fleas go. Eggs can be sterilized with certain products that are called insect growth regulators and these are found in area treatment sprays as well as some spot-on products that are applied to the skin of cats and dogs.
We dispense Sentinel heartworm prevention medication to our dog patients to prevent heartworms (which are transmitted by mosquito bites to dogs) and to aid in reducing flea infestations because Sentinel contains luefeneron which interferes with flea egg and larval development. Dogs should be tested before starting this medication if they have not been on a heartworm preventative previously.

I have had many cats in the last 20yrs. I did rescues in oakland in my hood. I loved them all and they were very well taken care of. Dr. Dorsey was very workmanlike and very thourogh. and very kind and compassionate when one of my friends needed a way out. I will always think kindly and thankfully about this place.

They're no nonsense, practical, kind and efficient. No upsells or condescension - but when you're going through something difficult, they are so incredibly kind and just... life saving!

Dr. Dorsey and the entire team at Oakland Vet guided us through an incredibly difficult time when our dog was diagnosed with cancer. They helped us find a great place for treatment and very realistically talked us through the decisions we would have to make. I am forever grateful that they were there for us and while a diagnosis like that absolutely sucks, having a care team you trust makes it so, so

This is a very nuts and bolts kind of Vet hospital. I have had a situation where they did not catch the real issue with my pet. I had to go to a specialist. My pet passed eventually, and for the fact that I had been seeing them for 10 years, they do not even have the courtesy of complimentary euthanasia. Very business like about the weight and disposal etc.
Sad and disappointing!

The receptionist was kind but unfortunately this vet won't take new clients if the pets have seen a different vet. My cat has a skin condition and my regular vet didn't have any availability and asked me to go elsewhere. I called here but their policy is firm. Really sucks since they are less than a mile away. I guess don't tell them you are responsible pet owner and have taken your pets for check ups in the past.

This review is long overdue, Thank you Oakland Vet Hospital for taking care of my puppy when he was struck by a car.

I was distraught and turned away from my own vet (East bay vet by lake merrit) and luckily found Oakland Vet. They took my puppy in, but unfortunately found out he died upon impact and helped us prep for his passing. They were compassionate, gave me the time I needed to grieve and when I was finally able to let go, they helped me through the process to help him find his best eternal resting place.

I am forever thankful for everything they do and truly grateful for their kindness

We have been coming to Oakland Veterinary Hospital for close to 30 years. Over those years we've had many cats in our family. These cats have always shown up on our doorstep from the neighborhood and said, "Take me in. Feed me for the rest of my life." We have trusted their care to Drs. Hart and Dorsey for years and have always known them to provide the best of care and advice. Everybody who works at Oakland Veterinary Hospital who we have known through the years has been caring and compassionate.

When I adopted a senior pug, I became a frequent flyer at OVH. I could not recommend them more. For the more than 3 years we visited them, the doctors and their staff were kind, knowledgeable, and wonderfully human. When it came time to let my Bosley go a few months ago, I was so thankful for Dr. Dorsey and the rest of the OVH staff for showing us both such good care.

We've had nothing but good experiences here with both of our dogs and both Dr. Dorsey and Dr. Hart over the last few years. I'm mystified why people would leave 1-star reviews because they're not taking new patients or because they can't act as an emergency vet. Frustrating to see poor reviews for things like that (emergency vets are a totally different type of hospital, folks, OVH can't be faulted for not being an emergency vet, any pet owner should know this).

The care from the team at OVH has always been provided with compassion and warmth. We always get follow-up

Dr Maureen and Dr Hart are very kind and knowledgeable. Dr Maureen has helped take care of all of my fur kids. I cannot trust anyone else with my pups. She even took great care of my rabbit. Definitely use their services, they're the best

The hospital neutered my dog without mentioning she was in heat and was suppose to call before the procedure after she was checked if pregnant or not. They didn't even bother to call to let us know her situation and that she was still in heat and that would've made her surgery more dangerous and we could've waited.

My pet is pure bred and we had planned to have puppies and breed her and continue her lineage. She has a boyfriend but the hospital keep trying to coerce us to spray her and won't let us just check if she is just pregnant and tried to tie the surgery procedure with

After over 2 years of my periodically calling this vet clinic to see if they were taking new patients and being told no, I considered myself lucky this morning when they called me back and said they were accepting new patients. I had chosen this vet because this is the closest vet to where I live and because, though I heard the doctor had a terrible bedside manner and was a bit prickly, I heard she was a decent vet.

Well, forget all that. The receptionist told me she couldn't schedule me because I had an established vet. Yes, I have a 13-year old dog, of course I have a vet. But I am looking

Over the years, the Oakland Veterinary Hospital has cared for 5 of our dogs. We have always found them to be friendly and responsible --with us and with our dogs -- and they provide consistent followup and appointment reminders. Last week they called me on Christmas Day to remind me of an appointment the next day.

We also appreciate their direct, no-frills approach, and their attempts to keep fees reasonable. But they also feel like friends. Friends with boundaries, friends who are clear about what they can and cannot do for us, but I like friends like that.

Clearly they are doing something right

This is definitely a no frills vet hospital which can be a good thing. No unnecessary added fees or services ...keeps the vet visit to the basics. What kills them is their lack of respect for the human and failure to follow through or communicate. Because I have had horrible experiences with this place I switched vets. Oakland vet hospital could not be bothered to follow through and send the files to the new vet. I asked twice.

Recently moved to the area. Doctors' online profiles appear well qualified so I called for an appointment. Not taking on any new clients. Too bad for the Laurel District.

New patient experience:
I just took my senior dog to remove a skin growth and Dr. Dorsey and her tech took care of it quickly and so much more affordably than I had anticipated. All staff was very friendly. I highly recommend this office.
