Plum Island is an 11-mile long barrier Island off the shore of Newburyport and Newbury. Once largely a summer getaway, Plum Island is increasingly a year-round community. The island has many residences, a national wildlife refuge, restaurants, an inn on the beach, and of course miles of beautiful sandy beaches.
Check out the Parker River Plum Island National Wildlife Refuge. Located along the northeast coast of Massachusetts, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1941 to provide feeding, resting, and nesting habitat for migratory birds.

Most commonly associated with Plum Island - a barrier beach island - the refuge is comprised of more than 4700 acres of diverse habitats including sandy beach and dune, cranberry bog, maritime forest and shrub land, and freshwater marsh. The most abundant habitat on the refuge is its 3,000+ acres of salt marsh, one of the most productive ecosystems in nature.

The Compass Rose Inn was a great choice for spending a night in Newburyport after attending a wedding. A little pricier than I normally go for, but the location and style were top notch. It was right down the street from shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and the waterfront. We loved being able to walk to dinner and not have to deal with driving and parking.
The Inn itself is very clean and beautiful. We stayed in a suite, which had a small sitting room, beautiful French doors to the bedroom, a nice bathroom with a deep soaking tub, and air-conditioning controlled in-room. Everything you'd need

The inn is set back so it literally looks like your walking into a fairytale! The inn itself is immaculate. The room we rented was spotless like the rest of the inn. Entry room has Fireplace, French doors lead into the bedroom & a third galley room with a sink, fridge, air conditioner, coffee maker. Full bathroom with deep tub/shower, toilet & porcelain sink. Had better sleep on their king bed than mine at home! We go away every year for our anniversary & this was by far our favorite getaway!

My husband and I have stayed at the Compass Rose several times and it has been wonderful every time! Gloria & Ken treat us like old friends when we arrive, and are so knowledgeable and helpful. We love it and are planning to go back in the spring!

Lovely place. Gracious hosts. First time here. The room we were assigned is large and comfortable. Located in the downtown district and easy walk to the waterfront, shopping, and restaurants.
