Tacos El Grullense began selling tacos and delicious Mexican cuisine in Southern California when its' founder, Rafael Guerrero, immigrated there with his family from Jalisco, Mexico, in the 1970s. Don Rafa, as he's affectionately known as, and his family made their way to Redwood City, and in 1987, they opened their doors in Downtown Redwood City.
Tacos El Grullense #1 has since been a staple of Redwood City. Candelaria Guerrero, daughter of Don Rafa, and her husband David Patino have taken over managing the restaurant. They have since expanded the business and added Tacos El Grullense Grill and Tacos El Grullense C&D. They have continued to honor her father's legacy by serving quality food while holding on to their Mexican roots and strong family culure.

The food is good and definitely authentic Mexican food. There is a number of El Gruellense locations in Redwood City and if I remember correctly this is one of the original ones if not actually the very first. The later the location went up for additional locations, I didn’t like the food as much. I heard that even though the name is the same, it is run by different people. It’s not your usual chain in that the earlier locations are going to taste different than the locations to go up later.

Why so many great reviews? 6 of us were ready to love the food. But so disappointed.
Chicken Quesadilla, where to begin? Instant heartburn as it was overflowing with so many *raw* onions, it was so greasy the plate was dripping, the cheap cheese was a tasteless blob, and strangely could barely see any chicken (supposedly it was chicken?).
The Cali burrito and steak quesadilla were similarly inedible. The Mango juice was not good, but the Pineapple was delish. In fact go for the Pineapple juice and you will be happy.
