Yoga Off East founder Kathryn Smith first learned about LIFE Skills Foundation through a Duke alumni group and was introduced to Staff Member Laura Wooten who would eventually become a yoga teacher at YOE! We stand behind the important work of LIFE Skills Foundation to provide wrap-around support for youth who have aged out of foster care.
Yoga Off East began as the vision of a Duke University alum upon her return to Durham after a career as a Division I collegiate tennis coach. Kathryn Sell Smith realized that yoga would be an integral part of her transition out of a lifelong commitment to the sport of tennis. While tennis remains a part of Kathryn's life (her husband, Ramsey, is the Duke Men's Tennis Coach), she has happily traded in her tennis racquets for a yoga mat.

Yoga Off East is the best studio in the Durham area, by far! The yoga is high quality and incorporates more than just physical poses. The teachers are knowledgeable and the atmosphere is welcoming and community-oriented. You can find trauma-informed teachers who celebrate and welcome individuals from all walks of life. You can find your yoga home here! I highly recommend this yoga studio!

New to the area and looking for a yoga studio, dropped by quickly after work to see the he studio and check traffic pattern. An attendant sitting in the front of studio was seated at the desk. The door was locked and she would not get out of her seat to discuss the questions I had. I couldn’t hear her through the glass and she just kept pointing to the door. Extremely rude and arrogant, guess I didn’t fit the yogi type for her, this place comes across pretentious and exclusive, will look elsewhere

I am a yoga teacher visiting from SF. I was incredibly impressed with the class I took today from the owner Katherine. She was very thoughtful about the sequencing in terms of safe
alignment, and encouraged people to listen to their own bodies for modifications. Breath cues and creative analogies throughout created a very mindful practice. She seemed to be a very trauma informed teacherI would consider her a local expert in yoga instruction and would recommend the very clean and serene studio highly.

My favorite yoga studio. Many different teachers who are all wonderful and skilled. It's the real deal Ashtanga Flow type place. Good energy and very welcoming to all persons. They offer wonderful guided flow and encourage everyone to go at their own pace so it really is great for Every Body. Namaste

I guess I am a yogi now? I really haven't been able to enjoy yoga until I tried Yoga Off East. I don't know if I just wasn't ready or able to be mindful during classes up until this point, but the instructors at Yoga Off East helped me feel how I believe I am supposed to feel after yoga. Relaxed. Rejuvenated. Amazing. I highly recommend the instructors and I am looking forward to another class!

I've taken classes in many studios in the Triangle, DC, NYC, and Puerto Rico. With all honesty, today I took one of the best classes I have ever taken. Everything was so well thought out and explained, keeping concepts of mindfulness and life during the entire practice. I left feeling satisfied in so many ways.

I really enjoyed Yoga Off East! I went for a workshop, but I can definitely see myself going back! Yoga Off East was featured at Lululemon for Sunday yoga, and at the recommendation of one of the yoga teachers I went to the Fire and Earth workshop with Rob Hess and had a blast! The space is small, but it is cozy. So far all of the teachers that I've had from this studio are outstanding! Great personalities and amazing with their cues!

Yoga Off East and Kathy's (the owner) Power Yoga are hidden gems amidst the delicious walls of happy+hale. The space is intimate and welcoming, great thought has gone in to the use of light and storage...they just added coded cubbies for convenient safe keeping of your personal items. I have also enjoyed Andie;s Tuesday night Jam Flow and the Athlete Recovery Flow taught by Kathy on Fridays at noon...both are unique and highly effective offerings. Whether you are taking class on your lunch or after work, it's super convenient to be able to order a smoothie or salad on your way out.

I've been to this studio for several private group sessions. The studio is small and well-organized, with plenty of yoga props. You can tell a lot of thought went into the details. It's in a great location, especially being able to grab a smoothie at Happy+Hale on the way out after class. I like that the studio is tucked away and provides a much-needed refuge from a busy workweek. Also excited they are starting to offer TRX and look forward to trying that class too.

I really enjoyed my first class, Power Flow taught by Kathy, the studio's founder. The studio is tucked behind Happy + Hale on 9th street, which is great because you can pick up a smoothie or salad on your way out after class. But, if you come for a 7:15pm class, just be aware that Happy + Hale closes at 8:00pm.
As others have mentioned, the studio space is small, but this also means that the class size is naturally smaller which makes the practice and instruction feel more personal. The pace and variety of poses during the Power Flow class was perfect, Kathy is an excellent instructor

Attended Power Basics taught by Jessica today and it was amazing! It was my first time visiting this studio and the space had a great energy and was perfect for yoga. The window brought in great natural light! Jessica was very experienced in her teaching style and made everyone feel welcome and comfortable. Music was great, message was great, overall a wonderful practice. Do yourself a favor and check this place out!

When I walked into the Yoga Off East studio my first thought was, "Wow, this is small," but you know what they say: "Sometimes great things come in small packages." Located inside of Happy + Hale, this tiny yoga studio offers some great zen and solid teaching. If you have trouble finding the space once you walk into Happy + Hale, follow the arrow of the floor that points directly to "YOGA." Once you find the studio, there are some cubbies for you to leave your shoes and an ipad to check in. Be warned, some of the cubbies have keys and locks and others don't and
